Seller’s Story:
It wasn’t immediately “love at first sight” when we saw the house for the first time. However, upon walking into the garden, we saw the big potential and fell in love with the charming “Scandinavian look-a-like cottage style”. We realized that “substantial renovation” would be needed, as the house had lacked love for a couple of years. But we were sure that it would be absolutely worth it to restore “Vechtzicht” to old glory, while getting it ready to modern technology standards and -comfort. Carefully choosing what’s possible with an old house dated 1865, we wanted to preserve the “old soul”, giving attention to details and craftsmanship, yet making it more comfortable to live in.
So after having lived in the city for so many years, and Covid at our doorsteps, closing the world down, we thought this would be a next step for us to take.
The idea of being close to the city, yet being in the country side surrounded by water and nature, is best of both worlds. And for sure we’ve found tranquility here, swimming in the Vecht during summer days, cooling down in the shades of the big trees in the garden, or just a winter walk on the dike. The garden was overgrown and wild, and we tried to organically re-structure it, without any use of chemicals. And using lots of diverse inhabitant plants to welcome butterflies and bees, trying out what works and what not.
We have a very protected wild life of water species here, lots of different birds and the forest owls living in our high trees, which we are very proud of. Living here you realize how close you are to nature and the seasons again. In the later hours you hear the owls from the big trees. Regular trimming of trees was a big project itself, without destroying the living environment for so many bird species. But we found a good balance. The walnut tree giving shade in the summer and delicious fully organic nuts in autumn.
The village is small but nicely facilitated. We have a couple of nice restaurants, bakeries, delicacy shops, a drug store, and the supermarket just in walking distance. There is a small market every Tuesday. And Breukelen just 8 min drive away. The market on Fridays is very well assorted with good quality food stalls, specialty stalls, and a great flower stall. And Amsterdam, Utrecht, Hilversum and Schiphol are all just 20-25 minutes away.
Now with the world open again, we realize that we are ready for our next step, to live in two countries simultaneously. So we decided to move on.
Somebody for sure will see the potential and fall in love with this house and surroundings, just like we did, and will enjoy their time here in Loenen aan de Vecht.
